Exhibition on World Documentary Heritage

「Exhibition on World Documentary Heritage」 Special Exhibition for UNESCO/Jikji World Heritage Award-Winning Organizations Today's Jikji_ Records of Tuol Sleng the Future

Today's Jikji_ Records of Tuol Sleng the Future is the exhibition to illuminate the social meaning and role of restoration, preservation, and utilization of the records of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum in Cambodia, which won the 2020 8th UNESCO/Jikji World Heritage Prize.

During the reign of the Khmer Rouge from 1975-1979, the S-21 concentration camp was left behind after the end of Khmer Rouge period, where innocent citizens were detained, tortured, and killed, including forced labor and marriage for the continuation of the regime. Since 1979, with concerted efforts of many people, the camp has been converted into the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, a place to return the name and humanity to the victims and remember the inhumane atrocities of the Khmer Rouge regime. The archives of this museum have been collected and restored from the materials scattered in the camp since 1979, allowing them to be preserved as digital documents and photos. Notably, these records were used as basic data for refugees to find their lost families in the 1980s, and were used as important data proving the criminal atrocities of the leaders of the Khmer Rouge dictatorship at the UN war crimes trials until the 2010s. The most important thing about these records is that it serves as a tangible resource for educating future generations not to repeat the historical misdeeds and misfortunes of the past.

This exhibition is to find out the contemporary meaning of the 'UNESCO/Jikji World Heritage Prize', which praises the efforts made to protect the World Heritage for the remembrance and preservation of the human community through the archives of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, and to re-examine the importance and value of records.
