Cheongju City has been at the forefront of promoting printing culture and history to the world through Jikji, and striving to achieve exchange and development in the printing field. It has promoted ongoing networking with member organizations of the International Association of Printing Museums, which was officially launched at the Jikji Korea International Festival in 2018, and has made intangible efforts to strengthen the printing culture platform even during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Also, at this 2022 Jikji Festival, the results of our efforts finally bears fruit.
The German Klingspor Museum, which was finally selected through an open contest in May 2020, is one of the most important ‘treasuries of printing’ in Europe, and is a place that represents European modern and contemporary typography, type, books, and art. The Klingspor Museum, established based on the Klingspore typefoundry, which was the main activity stage of Rudolf Koch, a famous German calligrapher and type designer, held this exhibition to pay tribute to Korea, which has made a significant contribution to the history of type printing around the world.
It introduces the evolution of European modern and contemporary graphic art, represented by the meeting of type and art, through the production of the Taegeukgi-shaped exhibition hall, the works of German expressionist type designers, and the large works of art world masters such as Joan Miro and Hap Gris Harbor. Through “type”, it is to find the link between two distant countries in the world and to broaden the field of sharing where people of various cultures can enjoy each other’s art.
