Event of Nightscape of Geumdang (Main Hall) of Heungdeoksa Temple

Sept. 4(Wed.)~ 8(Sun.), 2024

Open-air space of the site of Heungdeoksa Temple

The area in 866 Uncheon-dong, Cheongju-si—which was designated as Historic Site No. 315—is known as the site of Heungdeoksa Temple where Jikji was printed.
According to the excavation surveys, there was a single-story temple hall facing south and it was flanked by a roofed corridor on both sides as a traditional layout of a temple adopted during the Unified Silla period and thereafter. It is presumed that there had been slight changes in the overall layout with repair works done. Those restored are the Main Hall (measuring 5 kan by 3 kan*) with hipped-and-gable roof and double-eaves and three-tiered stone pagoda. It was also arranged such that the corner stones for the roofed corridor and the Lecture Hall are seen by visitors among the grassy fields.
*1 kan refers to the length of the space between two columns, measuring 210 cm - 300 cm.

During the 2024 Jikji Festival, visitors are encouraged to see the nightscape of the Main Hall while having a good time with their family members, lovers, and friends.
Five colored lights, photo zones with special lights, and a space for interactive riding will be provided to help them spend a memorable time.

With the pleasantly cool night air of September, visitors will find it unforgettable to spend the whole night there. We hope they will realize how happy they are, being able to spend such a meaningful time with the valuable heritage of Jikji right next to them.
